Junior School students dug deep to support ANGLICARE Sydney’s annual Toys ‘n’ Tucker appeal to help feed Sydney’s poor and spread some joy this Christmas.

Urging family and friends to take the chance to make a positive impact on the lives of people in need, the students collected Christmas food and gifts for those who would otherwise go without.

Dean of the Junior School Mrs Felicity Grima said, ‘Toys ‘n’ Tucker is one of College’s many service projects and we have asked the students and parents to give gifts to ANGLICARE’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker programme this year, in leui of gifts to students and teachers.’

Each year the College celebrates the achievements of current students. This year the College has introduced an ‘Alumnus of the Year’ Award to recognise and support the work of a former student who is actively making a difference in the world. The College recognises that learning does not finish when the student graduates but is ongoing.

Anyone is able to submit an application to nominate an alumnus who is actively making a difference in the world. The successful recipient will be recognised at the annual Presentation Evening in December.

The successful recipient will be added to the College Honour Board, receive a Certificate of Achievement and the College will make a donation of $2500 to a non-profit organisation chosen by the Alumnus of the Year.

The Class of 1999 celebrated their 10 Year Reunion on Saturday night (31/10) at the Castle Hill Country Club.

Over 70 former students gathered with current and former staff and reminisced about the good old days at the College.

Both the founding and current Headmaster addressed the alumni as well as Belinda Kightley, the former School Captian.

Junior School students also welcomed the students to the venue, given the College was only 7-12 in 1999.

Today. Tuesday 27 October 2009 saw the official Induction of the Year 12 Leadership Team for 2010.  Leaders took their Oath of Office and recited their Declaration of Intent in front of fellow students and parents.

This was followed by a very pleasant morning tea which parents, staff and students thoroughly enjoyed.

William Clarke College has been announced the recipient of a $50,000 Schools First Local Impact Award.

The award recognises the outstanding community partnership William Clarke College has established with Glenhaven Green (retirement village) and various other community services.The core partnerships were established as part of the College’s Service Learning Program and have been in areas such as aged care services, volunteer services, emergency services organisations and special needs schools.

The Service Learning program allows students to learn about paid and unpaid service providers and work on a project which benefits the wider community, learn new skills and develop attitudes they would not necessarily gain from their mainstream classes.

Brought to life by NAB in partnership with The Foundation for Young Australians and the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), Schools First is a three year commitment by these organisations to recognise and promote excellence in school community partnerships.

Today, the College was presented with the $50,000 Schools First Local Impact Award novelty cheque by NAB. Teachers and students of William Clarke College were at the service as well as community partnership representatives from Glenhaven Green.
 

David Everett, who graduated from the College in 2004 has been awarded a Hills Shire Council Youth Excellence Award in a ceremony on Friday evening.

David’s award acknowledges his current work in Southern Uganda, where he is establishing a primary school to provide a better future for under-privileged children. David has partnered with United Future Foundation to build the school which will have 300 students and 10 teachers.  David has already registered the business in Australia and has secured the land from the Ugandan Government.

David will return to Uganda in 2010 to oversee the completion of the school and look for new projects after completing his Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Third World Development Studies.

Over 200 people were invited to attend the Club 50 and Club 100 Celebration event last Wednesday evening (23rd September).

Guests mingled with Chair of the College Council Philip Bell as well as several College Executive members prior to a brief address from the Headmaster David Raphael. Guests then received a small
thank you gift from the College.

Families become eligible as Club 50 members by contributing the equivalent of four contributions to the Building Fund during the calendar year at three times the per-child recommended amount (regardless of the number of children enrolled). Eligibility as a Club 100 member is achieved by contributing the equivalent of four contributions to the Building Fund during the calendar year at twice the per-child recommended amount (regardless of the number of children enrolled).

A lovely night was had by all.

Junior School started Swim School on Monday the 14th of September and there was much excitement in the air.

For the next two weeks Junior School will participate in the Swim and Survive program from the Royal Life Saving Society.
 
Swim and Survive provides opportunities to build confidence and respect for the water and develops:

* Water confidence

* Endurance

Last week Year 5 went to The Australian Museum to explore fossils as part of their study and what a wonderful time they had!

Some highlights included the the Minerals Gallery, the life size skeleton of a Muttaburrasaurus (which Year 5 learnt about in class the week before) and the realistic models of Megafauna, especially the
Diprotodon.
