William Clarke College marked a significant milestone in its 38-year history this week when we officially opened The Bryson Building, a new learning and community hub named in honour of our founding Headmaster, Mr Philip Bryson.
Located at the heart of the campus, the purpose-built facility has been designed to serve current and future generations of students, bringing together innovative and collaborative learning spaces, two new libraries, a new canteen and café, a large undercover gathering space and a multi-purpose rooftop venue. This landmark addition to the campus will support everything from daily classroom activities and library programs to large-scale events, examinations and community gatherings, supporting both academic growth and the rich community life of the College.
Reflecting on the significance of the new facility, Mr Alex Koch, Head of College, remarked: “Modern academic literature has reminded us what careful readers of the Bible have known for millenia. Namely, that humans flourish in a context of positive, rich and supportive relationships. The Bryson Building has been designed for this, where learning is done in collaboration and community.”
While the building represents an exciting investment in the future, the occasion was also an opportunity to reflect on the legacy that helped shape the College from its humble beginnings. Mr Bryson was renowned for taking the time to stop, listen and genuinely care for students and staff, fostering a culture where people felt valued, known and connected.
“It didn’t take me long to see so much about what is fantastic about William Clarke College,” Mr Koch said, reflecting on his early days at the College. “Its culture and traditions can be traced directly to the manner in which Mr Bryson established the school. What has struck me most is the number of students who were here at the time, so fondly speaking of Mr Bryson and the way that he would always stop to talk with students and take a personal interest in them. As the College has grown, that foundation has remained strong. That is, the importance of relationships has remained central.”
More than 100 guests gathered for this special event, including members of the Bryson family, College Council, staff and former staff, and invited guests, including representatives from Rohrig and PMDL, and Dr Michelle Byrne, Mayor of the Hills Shire Council. We extend a special thank you to Mr David Jennings and the staff team who worked tirelessly to bring this significant project to life.
Following the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, guests enjoyed a special tour of the new building and a wonderful morning tea as they celebrated this important chapter in the College’s journey. We give thanks for God’s faithfulness and pray that The Bryson Building will be a place where learning, belonging and Christ-centred relationships flourish for generations to come.
