When Year 12 student Suzannah S sat down to draw her younger brother, she wasn’t chasing awards or recognition. She simply wanted to capture something a photo never could: his quirky cheekiness and the joy he brings into her life.

That heartfelt intention has now landed her a place among the finalists in the 2025 Young Archie Competition, with her artwork selected from more than 3200 entries from young artists across Australia. This competition celebrates creativity in students aged 5 to 18, challenging them to capture the essence of someone special in their lives, such as a family member, friend or an inspirational role model.

Suzannah’s portrait, titled ‘Jonny’, will be on display at the Art Gallery of NSW from 10 May to 17 August 2025. “I actually don’t think this is my best piece,” Suzannah admitted, “but I entered it into the Young Archie because it was one of the first realistic portraits I did that actually captured someone’s likeness.”

Drawn entirely in charcoal, a medium Suzannah loves for its bold contrast and expressive depth, ‘Jonny’ is more than just a likeness. “I wanted to memorialise the positive impact he’s had upon my life,” she said. “I particularly enjoy drawing portraits and people’s faces because I find everyone I draw so beautiful. I love the idea that although we have the same features, behind every face is a story.”

Suzannah’s love of art started young, shaped by years of sketching cartoon scenes and characters freehand. Her passion was also influenced by her grandfather, a professional artist who creates photorealistic graphite works. After taking both the ‘Portraiture and Human Form’ and ‘Sculpture’ Xplore courses in Years 9 and 10, she decided to continue with Visual Arts as part of her HSC. “I’ve been really blessed with my art teacher, Mrs Arcella,” she shared. “She constantly encourages me to push myself in my art classes.”

And her advice for other young creatives? “Ohhh, too much pressure,” she laughed. “Maybe don’t compare yourself to what other people complete. If I had let myself get discouraged by the incredible artworks of the other people in my class, I wouldn’t have kept pushing myself to get better.”

Don’t miss the chance to see ‘Jonny’ at the free Young Archie exhibition, a beautiful celebration of creativity from the next generation of artists. While you’re there, make sure to check out the renowned Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes on display too. It’s definitely worth a trip into the city!
